What Is Testosterone?

Testosterone is a naturally occurring steroid hormone belonging to a group of hormones called androgens. It plays an important role in male sexual development, reproductive health, muscle mass, bone density, red blood cell production, and overall physiological function.

In men, testosterone is produced primarily by the testes, with smaller amounts produced by the adrenal glands. Women also produce testosterone, primarily through the ovaries and adrenal glands, although at significantly lower levels.

Testosterone influences many important functions in the body, including sexual desire, muscle development, bone health, and the production of red blood cells. In men, testosterone levels may gradually decline with age, although significant deficiency is not an inevitable part of aging. Other factors, including obesity, chronic illness, certain medications, and sleep disorders, can also affect testosterone levels.

Testosterone has two primary types of physiological effects:

Anabolic effects: These support the growth and maintenance of tissues, including skeletal muscle and bone.

Androgenic effects: These contribute to the development and maintenance of male reproductive tissues and secondary sexual characteristics, such as facial and body hair and a deeper voice.

Maintaining appropriate testosterone levels is important for men’s health. When testosterone levels are consistently low and accompanied by compatible symptoms, a medical evaluation can help determine whether testosterone deficiency is present and whether treatment may be appropriate.

At NuGenesis Medical, we believe that understanding your hormone health is an important part of personalized medical care. Our approach includes individualized evaluations, laboratory testing, and ongoing monitoring when testosterone replacement therapy is indicated.

Brain and Mood

Testosterone plays a role in several aspects of men’s well-being, including sexual desire, mood, and overall sense of vitality. Men with clinically low testosterone may experience changes in mood, motivation, and concentration. However, these symptoms can have many causes, and testosterone replacement therapy is not a treatment for clinical depression or cognitive disorders.

Muscle

Testosterone plays an important role in the development and maintenance of skeletal muscle. In men with confirmed testosterone deficiency, appropriate testosterone replacement therapy can increase lean muscle mass and may improve muscle strength. Results vary among individuals, and regular physical activity, resistance training, and proper nutrition remain important components of maintaining muscle health.

Body Fat and Metabolism

Testosterone influences body composition, including the balance between lean muscle mass and fat mass. In men with confirmed testosterone deficiency, treatment may help improve body composition by increasing lean muscle mass and modestly reducing fat mass. Testosterone replacement therapy is not a weight-loss treatment, and it should not be used as a substitute for a medically supervised weight management program.

Bones and Bone Health

Testosterone contributes to maintaining bone mineral density and skeletal strength. Men with significant testosterone deficiency may experience reduced bone density over time. Appropriate testosterone replacement therapy can improve bone mineral density in some men with confirmed deficiency. However, testosterone therapy alone is not a substitute for approved osteoporosis treatment or fracture-prevention strategies

Heart and Cardiovascular Health

Testosterone plays a role in several processes related to cardiovascular and metabolic health. Research has identified associations between low testosterone levels and certain cardiovascular risk factors, including obesity, insulin resistance, and changes in body composition. However, the relationship between testosterone levels, testosterone replacement therapy, and cardiovascular health is complex. Testosterone therapy is not a treatment for heart disease or heart failure. Men considering treatment should receive an individualized medical evaluation, including assessment of cardiovascular health and potential treatment risks.

Sexual Health

Testosterone plays an important role in male sexual health, particularly sexual desire (libido) and reproductive function. Men with clinically low testosterone may experience decreased sexual desire and, in some cases, erectile difficulties.

Erectile dysfunction can have many contributing factors, including vascular disease, diabetes, medication effects, and psychological factors. When testosterone deficiency is confirmed, appropriate testosterone replacement therapy may improve sexual desire and can help some men with erectile symptoms. An individualized evaluation helps determine the underlying cause and the most appropriate treatment options.
